CATEGORY 1: THE STUDENTS (JOB SEACHERS CAN ALSO LEARN)



It has been a while now on this topic, “techniques of effective reading and understanding”. I strongly advice that you go to my previous posts for the introduction of this series. We have been dealing on the techniques of effective reading and the next technique to consider is the OK4R formula for reading, understanding and recalling.



OK4R stands for “Overview, Key Points, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review”. This techniques actually has 6 steps and appears to be an extension of the SQ3R technique discussed in my previous posts since both are the same in terms of substance except that while SQ3R has 5 steps, OK4R has 6 steps.



The OK4R works as follows for those who may wish to try it: Again when presented with a written text, the first step here is for the reader to look through the pages of the text – this is the OVERVIEW which is comparable to the survey step in the SQ3R technique. This is followed by the KEY POINTS stage when the reader is required to select the key points after he has skimmed through the text to locate the topic sentences and key words subsequent upon having raised some questions about them. This approach is also similar to the second stage in the SQ3R method.



The next stage is the first of the 4R, which is the READING stage. Here, the reader is to actually read as in the same stage in the SQ3R technique. The second R is the fourth step when the reader is to RECITE what he has learned – the same as in the other technique. The third R which is the 5th step requires the reader to REFLECT on all the issues, points, questions, etc, that have emerged from the text. The last stage is the fourth R which stands for REVIEW or REVISE. The reader here revises the text as in the fifth step of the SQ3R technique.

CATEGORY 2: GRADUATES



In my previous post, we talked about the dos and don’ts before you are called into the interview room. Now let us go to the stage where you are called into the interview room.



DOS AND DON’TS IN THE INTERVIEW ROOM



ü When you are called in, acknowledge your salutation. Salute the panelists as the time of the day dictate. Look at the chairman in the face.

ü Sit an upright position. Don’t lean on the table even if you are tired.

ü You will normally be required to introduce yourself. Announce your name, your current position, your qualifications and work experience in not more than five minutes. If you have won awards and prizes, be they local, national or international, ensure that they are PROUDLY announced. Display the plaque or object of honour. It is not likely that the panelist will be interested in you being a graduate but that you made a 1st Class or an Upper Second or that you won the departmental, faculty or Vice Chancellor’s prize for the best athlete or all-round student or the university goal-keeper or football captain. Those are things that make you different from others. That is what you should stress. Don’t mention your areas of failure but SELL your ASSETS rather than bemoan you liabilities.

ü Answer the questions as concise as possible. While answering the questions, look at the interviewer asking the question straight in the face. That shows self-confidence. If you have an evidence to support your answer, show it. It may be a picture or commendation letter or even a pay slip. You may even show a slide on your laptop if need be.

ü If they ask you what remunerations you will like to earn, your reply should be “affordability, regularity, fairness and performance”. You may ask for too much or too low.

CATEGORY 1: FOR THE STUDENTS



My students worldwide, it is no longer news that we have been dealing with the topic “techniques of effective reading and understanding. If you are new to the topic, it is strongly advisable for you to start this series from the scratch. Go to my previous posts for the start – go down now!



The strategies for effective reading and understanding is what we have been dealing with. Let us go to the next strategy called the 3S3R strategy of reading. 3S3R (SSSRRR) stands for Survey, Study-read, Speed-read, Recite/Record, Review and Reflect.

Step 1: SURVEY is similar to the “survey” in SQ3R and the yet to be treated OK4R techniques except that in the present case the reader’s survey should give him both the preview of the general contents and also allow him to discover key points as well as anticipate relevant question.



Step 2: STUDY-READ involves the process whereby the reader reads slowly or intensively making necessary pauses and marking the text where necessary. This step is designed to ensure maximum understanding as well as careful evaluation of the text. Therefore, the step could be repeated before the next stage.



STEP 3: SPEED-READ. At this stage, the reader goes through the whole text again at a faster speed than was earlier employed. The aim is to identify information that has earlier been understood as well as pick up those that were only partially understood. It is also designed to help retention.



STEP 4: RECITE: Go and read through the recitation stage in mu previous post in the other techniques, it is are the same.



STEP 5: REVIEW. Similar to the review in my previous post. Go and search for it now.



STEP 6: REFLECT. Reflection offers the opportunity to consider the extent to which the reader had comprehended and evaluated the information contained in the text. It also offers the reader the opportunity to compare the universal truth of the facts in the text i.e. how far the facts contained in the text are in consonance with similar facts as presented by other authors.



In my next post, I shall be giving you the last strategy of reading effectively, which is the OK4R technique of reading. Watch out in few days.



CATEGORY 2: GRADUATES



In my last post, we started the dos and don’ts in following up interview invitations, it is advisable for you to start from the last post before coming back to this post – go down now. Let us continue from where we stopped;

 Study your CV and application, and see if there are loopholes or unaccounted for periods. Find answers for them.

 Draw up possible interview questions and find answers to them. Such questions should include case studies. You may even dramatize or rehearse them with your friends, spouse or siblings. The essence of these is to get self-confident because without self-confidence, any boardroom can intimidate you and make you panic or nervous.

 On the interview date, leave home as early as you can so that you can arrive at the venue if not early, at least on time. You must not get there a second late whatever the excuse or environmental condition may be. In cities for example, you must be conscious of traffic congestion particularly at rush period when workers are resuming work in the morning. Take a reading material with you.

 You must also be as neat and clean as possible. If you have to take a mass transit bus, you can package your formal dress in a suitcase and come to wear it in the premises of the organization or somewhere nearby. You can always find a place. Ensure that you formally dressed.

 Ensure that you register your name and the time of arrival if a sheet has been provided. The order of arrival may be the order of the interview. If no registration procedure is provided for at the reception, walk up to the person who signed the letter of invitation for interview with politeness and courtesy to announce your arrival.

 Be full of smiles and confidence. Do not stay aloof from others. You can even initiate a discussion based on the headlines or articles in the national dailies. Share felicitations with all fellow interviewees. You are not at war.



With these, I think the ‘before’ of the interview have been dealt with. In my next post, we shall be talking about the dos and don’ts when in the interview room. Watch out in few days.

CATEGORY 1: CONTINUATION OF THE TOPIC FOR THE STUDENTS “TECHNIQUE OF READING AND UNDERSTANDING (READING SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES)” NOW LETS GO.

In my last post, I told you about the strategies of reading. You were given 4 strategies of reading and one of them has been explained. I acknowledge the comments of some of my Nigerian followers. Thanks for your text messages and comments. I can assure you that none of your were born dull. There are ways of improving your memory, and that is why this blog is here for you.

Away to the SQ3R strategy of reading now. SQ3R stands for survey, question, read, recite and revise. You SURVEY a text by skimming quickly over the text to get a general feel of the material to be studied. This is like a familiarization tour. If you are surveying a book for instance, you should look at the title page, table of contents (they deal with the topics treated), headings, summaries and conclusions.


The next stage requires a series of QUESTIONS based on the material that you have already surveyed. This encourages reading for a purpose, looking for specific answers and anticipating essential points of information.



Then comes READING at a fairly rapid speed since one has already acquired some knowledge of what one is looking for, having already read the text and formulated some questions concerning the material.



The next stage is RECITATION of the answer to the questions that have been formulated. Finally, a REVISION of the material: it includes surveying the whole material again to ensure that it can form a unified whole material again to ensure that it can form a unified whole. This stage may well be a repetition of all the previous steps in the SQ3R technique.



This will do for now students. Now let’s speak with the graduates.



CATEGORY 2: FOR THE GRADUATES (BEFORE AND DURING INTERVIEW)

It is a major achievement for you to have qualified for the stage of an interview, you must therefore follow it up with all caution. There are certain things you need to do or avoid before and during the interview;

ü Read the letter of invitation or message on your phone at least thrice to ascertain date, venue, time and what you are required to bring along.

ü Enter the appointment in your diary or organizer

ü Find out about the organization either by paying a personal visit to the organization or by checking libraries of the Stock Exchange in your country, or the official place to which companies submit annual reports in your country. If it is a public liability company, you may log on to the internet for information

ü Get your dress, certificates and other requirements packed in only one place. Do not forget writing stationey like pen and paper. It may include notebook or laptop. You need your call cards.

ü Go back and read the original advertisement to which you applied; and study the schedule advertised as well as the personal qualities required. Find answers to the issue raised.
