“STRATEGIES FOR DOING EFFECTIVE READING (SERIES 1)”
Find a suitable environment depending on why and what you are reading – newspaper, textbook.
Ensure you have a good functioning eyesight; go for a lense if you have a bad eyesight.
What is the purpose? Digestion, browsing, information, examination. Decide on the purpose.
Have a focus of subject matter. Purposeful reading. You can detect this from subject heading/title, science, etc.
Ensure that the material is within your competence and interest. The material must be in the language that is understandable by the reader. Figures and signs in maths, physics and chemistry are languages.
Read in meaningful groups of words e.g. phrases, clauses and sentences other than in individual words.
Learn how to read different types of writings e.g. exposition, description, narration, argument.
Study the headline to give you idea of how it is likely to be arranged e.g. INFLATION: a) Definition b) Causes c) Effect
Understand that all good writings are divided into INTRODUCTION; BODY and CONCLUSION.
Identify the topic sentence. The sentence that is leading or summarises the subject matter.
Do not read with lips/ mouth. Avoid VOCALISATION.
Read with eyes and the mind rather than with lips (CONCENTRATION).
NOTE-TAKING: Use notebooks for jotting using various abbreviations both personal, local, national and international.

“WHY STAFF UNDER-PERFORM IN ORGANISATIONS AND HOW TO CHECK UNDER-PERFORMANCE” with Joshua Osagie (JI)
So many organizations (big or small) worldwide have staff who under-perform in their duties and responsibilities. Now the question is why? There are so many factors to be considered in this topic. It is not always a case of poor take home pay and other allowances which cannot be ruled out, there are other factors that influence under-performance. Now let’s go!
The case of poor and delayed remuneration: This is for sure the number one factor an organization should consider in preventing under-performance. It is the responsibility of management to review the pay package of all staff in rank and file. Ensure your staff get paid adequately and on time, it is their means of livelihood and should not be disregarded. Research shows that poor and delayed remuneration often result in low input from staff even without demonstrations or complaints. You may feel that they are not complaining, but in the long run, the effect will be evident in the organisation’s output. Deal with this issue today.
Poor management-staff relationship: This is another factor that breeds under-performance. You may assume your staff are so comfortable with the considerable pay package given to them, but that is not always the case. Comfort can only be established with a good relationship with your staff. Organise monthly meetings with them before their pay packages are given to them, appreciate their input and worth by words of mouth, this will increase their performance. Give them room to ask questions and relay their complaints to you – this can also be done by placing a suggestion box for staff only.
Ladies and Gentlemen, yet again, we are not done. Many would think that it is all about money and comfort. In the next post (just in few days), we shall be considering so many other factors that breed under-performance and how to check them. Watch out!
