You have been given the different types of reading, let us now go to the strategies of effective reading. It is very advisable for you to go to my previous post before reading through this, because it is in series. Don’t miss out. Be sure you are on your way to success academically.


STRATEGY 1


• PR4: Preview, Read, Recall, Re-read, Review


• SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Revise


• OK4R: Overview, Key Points, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review/Revise


• 3S3R: Survey, Study-read, Speed-read; Recite/Record, Review and Reflect
The strategies above will be well explained in this series. Let me start with the PR4 strategy. PREVIEWING a book or topic in a subject involves reading a title, introduction, subtitles, preface, opening paragraphs, conclusions and illustrations. This will make you to begin to anticipate (expect) questions which could be asked on issues not clarified by pictures, subtitles, explanations and even statistics. Preview aids the understanding of your actual reading.

READING speed is faster when ideas clarified by the preview are encountered, and the speed becomes slower for new areas of reading. The next stage is the RECALL, where you try to jot down or recite the ideas you remember and the sequence in which they appear in the text. You may not be able to remember everything. So you try the next stage.
When you RE-READ areas you do not understand, you read very carefully. This is also the time to re-read the definitions of technical terms. The final R stands for REVIEWING. This requires filling in the gaps missed out in the recall stage. After filling the gaps, you may then go over the points you jotted down to ensure that you fully understand them.
That will do it for today, you don’t need special centres for success, you don’t need to venture into examination malpractice to succeed. Read easily and effectively to succeed. Watch out for my next post in few days for a continuation of the strategies of reading as we go to the SQ3R strategy.

It is appalling (shocking) that so many graduates cannot structure out a good resume or curriculum vitae, neither can they write a good Letter of Application. The road to success requires hard work. If you don’t work hard, you cannot do well academically. The greatest prerequisite (requirement) to success is “belief in yourself”; go to my previous post for more on the principles of self-belief. People venture in to examination malpractice because they don’t belief in themselves. You don’t need special centres, you don’t need special examiners to excel in your exams. What you need is yourself. You must study hard to succeed academically. Paying a special visit to that lecturer for help is not a good decision; belief in yourself coupled with hard work is great gain.


This series is going to be featuring techniques of reading effectively and capturing what you study. The first topic of focus is “Techniques of Effective Reading”.


TECHNIQUES OF EFFECTIVE READING


There are different types of reading;


· Skimming: An extremely fast reading pace used to get the general gist in a text, for the purpose of searching if a text is useful.


· Scanning: Which is like searching for your name on a list in a notice board.


· Word-by-Word Reading: Which is used to understand certain texts in specialized areas of knowledge. It is a slow reading process as seen in reading a foreign language you are not familiar with, mathematical figures, equations and formulae or even unusual medical or pharmaceutical words.


· Light Reading: This is a leisure reading method with no effort to absorb the material (no intention to recall). It is used mainly for entertainment.


· Study Reading: This is the type of reading recommended for students and those in the academic circle. This is a reading method that is slow in pace and used when the material has to be evaluated or summarized. Your intention is more deliberate particularly if you want to memorise or be able to retain and recall what you have been reading. This reading method is strongly recommended for tertiary level education.


Ladies and gentlemen, this is just an introductory post. Watch out for my next post on techniques to improve you reading skills as we continue from this point I few days.

If you can truly discover the purpose and you have the passion for that very course you have studied, it is very advisable for you to endeavour to read further in that very course of yours without much delay. It is what you have passion for that you deliver effectively when required to.

The first trait of winners is belief in their dreams. Performance is not a measure of value; it is a reflection of it. You perform up to the expectation that you and significant others have of you in advance. So the expectation equals motivation, and motivation is an inner force that compels behaviour.


The most important belief you will ever have is about your potential. Why would you be motivated to learn if you did not think you were worth the effort? You must look at your self as an uncut gemstone of potential diamond in the making that only needs to be cut and polished with experience, skills and knowledge, skills and knowledge.


Belief is the single most important thing. I believe I can do something more than I am doing, and I won’t let anything stop me. You project on the outside what you feel on the inside. The most important opinion you will ever have is the one in your head. That makes you your greatest coach.


HOW DO YOU INCREASE YOUR WORTH AND PROJECT THE BELIEF IN YOURSELF?

Give your name first when you meet someone. Smile because it is a light in the window to let someone know you are. Don’t use trial and error; read biographies of people who have overcome the most to become successful. The most successful people read the most . Use mentors. There are dozens of ways to increase your belief in yourself . With a belief in yourself you can cultivate your talents. Talent is inborn. You will never have another ounce of talent because it was given to you at the moment you were conceived. It is a combination of all the marvelous things that came before you. For example, the ability to hold a scapel steady is inborn; musical talent is inborn. There are 19 natural gifts that have been discovered. Your job is to dust off and uncover your talents so they can bud and bossom. The things you have to do in the evenings and on Saturdays are where your talents lie.

YOU ARE A SUCCESS IF YOU WORK HARD

Principle Number 5: Develop a vision mission statement




The reason so many give up on their goals is because they don’t have an overall sense of mission or purpose. In other words, what if you are the father or the mother of a family? How important is it that you are an example to your children? How important is it that you are the one who contributes to society and achieves a feeling of giving back, rather than just taking and always asking what is in it for me?


Once you get a deep sense of your mission, your purpose in life and your value system that you want to live by basedupon universal and timeless principles, then it’s the time to set goals and set up a system of accountability, not only for yourself, but for your loved ones, so that you have some follow-through system that keeps you on track.


Principle Number 6: Think win-win


Now is a good time to turn over a new leaf and take stock of your attitude and relationships as we conclude this discussion. Start any good thing you are doing with a win-win attitude. It’s the basic idea of Golden Rule. It’s mutual respect and mutual benefit. If you have a win-win spirit, you want the other person to win as well.


Most people grow up with the cultural DNA of being compared to other people and they begin to see life through that lens so they begin to think win-lose or lose-win or compromise at best. The great identity theft is not having someone take your wallet and use your credit cards, it’s the cultural DNA of a comparison-based approach that robs people of their true identities. That is why we must start with little children, to affirm their worth and potential and to avoid any form of comparison.


I am not worried about the athletic comparison or competition in the marketplace, but in the workplace and in the home place we need to have every person feel their worth and their potential and to be part of a complementary team.


Win-win is based on the paradigm that there is plenty for everybody that one person’s success is not achieved at the expense or exclusion of the success of others. The more you practice this habit, the more committed you will become as you find solutions that truly do benefit both parties, when originally it lokked as if no such agreement might be reached. Courageous leadership which is the ability to make our world better, starts with how we live our lives.

Principle Number 3: Seek to understand and be understood

It is human nature for us to want to be understood. When both parties are trying to be understood, neither party is really listening. This interaction is called “the dialogue of the deaf”. But to understand is an important key to interpersonal relationships and can magically transform the course of discussions. By making the investment of time and effort required to understand the other party, we change the dynamics of the interchange.

Let everyone feel understood to create a better relationship and for everyone to listen to one another emphatically. This can unleash a level of creative energy that can produce third, alternative solutions to problems that no one had ever thought about before.

What air is to the body, to be understood is to the heart. As soon as the heart feels understood, you become open and teachable and creative. The leadership of Nigeria at 50 years of independence need to follow Covey’s principles if they are to achieve vision 20:20:20.

Principle Number 4: Begin with end in mind

The most fundamental application of begin with end in mind is to begin today with image or picture of the end of your life as your frame of reference by which everything else is examined. Each part of your life can be examined in the context of what really matters most to you. It also means that you should start a clear understanding of your destination. It means you are going so that you better understand where you are now and so the steps you take are always in the right direction. It is very easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busy-ness of life, to work harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover it is leaning against the wrong wall. It is possible to be busy, very busy without being very effective.

How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important for us and keeping that picture in our minds, we manage ourselves each day to be and to do what really matters most.
